Swedish furniture retailer IKEA has announced a new initiative to foster AI literacy within the company. Under the guidance of Parag Parekh, the Chief Digital Officer of IKEA Retail (Ingka Group), the company has initiated comprehensive training programs designed to enhance the technological knowledge of its employees.
IKEA's upskilling initiative targets around 3,000 co-workers and 500 leaders, providing them with essential AI skills.
The curriculum includes basic AI fundamentals for all employees, alongside specialized courses such as “Responsible AI” and “Mastering GenAI,” which focus on ethical considerations and advanced technological applications. As a part of the program, leaders are provided the opportunity to engage in “AI Exploration Days,” aligning AI's potential with the company's strategic goals.
Additionally, IKEA has launched an Accelerator Programme specifically tailored for individuals holding advanced degrees in Data Science, Machine Learning, or Large Language Models. Led by Francesco Marzoni, the Global Data and Analytics Officer, this program aims to prepare participants for critical roles within the company, ensuring that IKEA remains innovative.
‘’We are providing a blended experience for learning, and doing in a way that future-proofs our workforce to ensure we remain at the forefront of innovation,’’ says Francesco Marzoni, Global Data and Analytics Officer for IKEA Retail.
The company also collaborates with external partners and utilizes AI tools developed in-house, like the “Hej Copilot,” a collaboration with Microsoft. This tool assists employees with various tasks, from content creation to presentation building, thus enhancing their productivity and focusing on higher-value activities.
