The U.S. National Labor Relations Board recently appointed David K Gaston as the Agency’s first Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO).

“We are very pleased that David will be serving as our new CAIO. David has ably led the development and execution of information policy and litigation strategy for seven years at this Agency and for nearly 15 years in the federal government. His expertise will allow the NLRB to move forward strategically in the area of AI,” General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo said in a statement.

Gaston will oversee the NLRB’s adherence to federal directives on advancing AI governance and innovation while managing associated risks in the federal government.

Moreover, he will continue his current duties as Assistant General Counsel and Branch Chief of E-Litigation, where he leads NLRB’s strategy on information policy and develops tools for handling electronically stored information in legal proceedings.

Prior to joining the NLRB, Gaston worked as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney at the Department of Justice, an Attorney Advisor at the Department of Agriculture, and in the private sector.

He has a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School and two Bachelor of Arts degrees, both magna cum laude, from the University of Georgia.

“David is a nationally recognized expert in information governance, technology policy, and digital evidence. We are confident David’s deep experience will tremendously benefit our work, and we look forward to his leadership in this new role,” Chairman Lauren McFerran said.
