U.S. lawmakers are increasing scrutiny of the growing use of Chinese artificial intelligence models by American companies, citing concerns over national security, cybersecurity and foreign influence, according to media reports.
The House Committee on Homeland Security and the House Select Committee on China launched a joint investigation earlier this year into the adoption of China-developed AI technologies. The probe includes requests for information from companies such as Cursor and Airbnb regarding their use of Chinese AI models and potential exposure to associated risks.
Lawmakers argue that advances in Chinese AI systems are narrowing the performance gap with U.S. competitors while offering lower cost alternatives, making them increasingly attractive to businesses. Committee leaders have expressed concerns that some models could reflect Chinese government priorities, including censorship and ideological influence.
The investigation is also examining whether the U.S. has a sufficiently competitive open-weight AI strategy to provide domestic alternatives. Some lawmakers have warned that without stronger support for American AI development, Chinese models could become foundational tools for businesses worldwide.
While several U.S. government agencies have restricted the use of certain Chinese AI platforms, adoption by private companies remains legal.
