The U.S. Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) is looking for generative artificial intelligence technologies to enhance military planning processes, according to an industry solicitation.

“Generative artificial intelligence has the potential to augment human planners and command staff by rapidly processing information, producing draft planning products, and ultimately aiding in generating options. However, integrating this technology into joint planning presents challenges,” the DIU said.

This request is part of DIU's "Thunderforge Area of Interest (AoI): Generative AI for Joint Planning" initiative. Submissions for this solicitation are due by September 6.

The DIU will prioritize solutions that show proven ability to improve planning processes, adhere to responsible AI practices such as explainability and traceability, integrate seamlessly with current or future joint planning systems, and offer clear methods for testing, evaluating, and establishing trust in AI capabilities.

Last week, Defense Innovation Unit Director Doug Beck visited Chile, where he met with senior U.S. military leaders and their counterparts from Latin America and the Caribbean. The discussions focused on collaborative efforts to use AI and machine learning to address complex, shared security challenges.

The DIU is a U.S. Department of Defense organization founded to help the U.S. military make faster use of emerging commercial technologies.
