The Pentagon’s Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and the Department of Defense (DOD) have launched a new recruitment initiative to attract top software engineering talent to support the military’s technology modernization efforts.

The program, called War Force, operates under OPM’s broader Tech Force initiative, which was introduced in December 2025 to expand hiring of technology and cybersecurity professionals across federal agencies.

According to OPM, the initial hiring campaign will focus on candidates with expertise in advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, automation, data systems and software engineering. The effort seeks professionals capable of developing and maintaining technology solutions that support military operations.

“America’s national security depends on attracting the best technical talent to some of the government’s most important missions. War Force builds on the momentum of Tech Force by connecting outstanding engineers with opportunities to solve complex challenges alongside the War Department. We’re making it easier for top talent to serve their country through meaningful technical work,” OPM Director Scott Kupor said. The announcement follows DOD’s launch of a cyber apprenticeship program designed to strengthen its technology workforce.
