NTIA Calls for Independent Audits of "High-Risk" AI Systems

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) of the Department of Commerce has proposed independent audits for high-risk AI systems as part of its AI Accountability Policy Report.

This report aligns with President Joe Biden's directive to harness AI opportunities while mitigating associated risks. Implementing AI accountability policies is crucial for maximizing the potential of this technology.

They will enable developers and deployers to demonstrate the intended functionality and trustworthiness of AI systems, fostering confidence among the public and in the marketplace.

“NTIA’s AI Accountability Policy recommendations will empower businesses, regulators, and the public to hold AI developers and deployers accountable for AI risks, while allowing society to harness the benefits that AI tools offer,” says Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information, and NTIA Administrator Alan Davidson.

The NTIA is also seeking inputs on how widely available access to open-weight models may impact national security.

Last month, NTIA launched a ‘Request for Comment’ on the risks, and benefits associated with advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models with widely available model weights.
