New Bill Advocates AI Adoption by DHS for Strengthening Border Security

A bipartisan bill presented in the House tasks the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) with exploring the potential applications of artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies to bolster border security.

Introduced by Representatives Lou Correa (D-Calif.) and Morgan Luttrell (R-Texas), the Emerging Innovative Border Technologies Bill urges DHS to present a comprehensive plan to Congress outlining how AI, machine learning, and nanotechnology can be utilized to improve or address existing capability gaps in border security operations.

“Border security means keeping drug and human traffickers away from our communities—and new, bleeding-edge technology that is already available for commercial use would give our hard-working officers the tools they need to keep us safe,” Correa said.

This legislative initiative follows the recent unveiling of the Department of Homeland Security's "Artificial Intelligence Roadmap" in the previous month.

The AI roadmap delineates DHS's strategies: responsibly utilizing AI to advance Homeland Security while safeguarding privacy and civil rights; promoting nationwide AI safety and security to mitigate risks; and fostering cohesive partnerships with various sectors to develop tailored AI solutions. DHS aims to engage communities, advocates, and partners to demonstrate responsible AI use and ensure its commitment to privacy and civil liberties.

DHS is also planning to hire around 50 artificial intelligence (AI) experts in 2024.  The newly established DHS "AI Corps" draws inspiration from the U.S. Digital Service, assembling teams dedicated to responsibly leveraging this innovative technology across key areas of homeland security.
