Google, Microsoft, Nvidia CEOs in DHS AI Safety and Security Board

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently announced that 22 individuals working in artificial intelligence have joined its newly introduced Artificial Intelligence Safety and Security Board.

The board will oversee the safe and secure implementation of AI technology within critical infrastructure. It will provide guidance to stakeholders and develop recommendations to mitigate AI-related disruptions to vital services.

Notable names include Sundar Pichai, CEO, Alphabet; Sam Altman, CEO, OpenAI; Dario Amodei, CEO and Co-Founder, Anthropic; Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO, Microsoft; Ed Bastian, CEO, Delta Air Lines; Rumman Chowdhury, Ph.D., CEO, Humane Intelligence; Alexandra Reeve Givens, President and CEO, Center for Democracy and Technology, Damon Hewitt, President and Executive Director, Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law; Jensen Huang, President and CEO, NVIDIA; and Arvind Krishna, Chairman and CEO, IBM, among others.

“I am grateful that such accomplished leaders are dedicating their time and expertise to the Board to help ensure our nation’s critical infrastructure – the vital services upon which Americans rely every day – effectively guards against the risks and realizes the enormous potential of this transformative technology,” Secretary Alejandro N Mayorkas said.

Secretary Mayorkas has appointed these experts to devise comprehensive, cross-sector strategies addressing the opportunities and challenges of emerging AI technology. 

The Board will convene quarterly, starting in early May, to:

Furnish actionable recommendations to the Secretary and critical infrastructure stakeholders for the secure integration of AI into essential services

Establish a platform for DHS, critical infrastructure entities, and AI experts to exchange insights on the security implications of AI.
