Six months after President Biden's Executive Order on AI, federal agencies have accomplished key milestones in managing AI's risks and harnessing its potential, the White House said. Federal agencies announced completion of all 180-day actions, following timely achievements following their recent successes completing each 90-day, 120-day, and 150-day action on time.

The White House highlighted that in the past 180 days, agencies tackled a wide array of AI safety and security risks, including establishing a framework to prevent the misuse of AI for dangerous biological materials.

Draft documents were released for public comment on managing generative AI risks, expanding international standards, and reducing risks from AI-generated content. Additionally, agencies developed guidelines for critical infrastructure safety and launched an AI Safety and Security Board, the White House said.

The Executive Order also addressed risks to workers, consumers, and civil rights, ensuring AI benefits all Americans. Agencies developed principles for safe AI deployment, provided guidance for employers, and ensured nondiscriminatory AI use in housing and healthcare.

Efforts were made to advance AI in scientific research, clean energy, and collaboration with the private sector.

Moreover, over 150 AI professionals have been hired, with plans to hire hundreds more by Summer 2024.

“Individuals hired thus far are already working on critical AI missions, such as informing efforts to use AI for permitting, advising on AI investments across the federal government, and writing policy for the use of AI in government,” the White House added.
