The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is seeking industry and research partners to help develop a new class of science-focused, open-weight artificial intelligence models.
Through the initiative, called the Genesis Open Models Initiative, DOE aims to create transparent and adaptable AI models that can support scientific discovery across a wide range of disciplines.
“These Genesis models aim to provide researchers, national laboratories, industry partners, and the broader open science community with powerful, transparent, and extensible AI models that can be adapted to a wide range of scientific domains and use cases,” DOE said in an overview of the initiative.
As part of the initiative, the department is inviting contributions throughout the development process, including foundational model development, domain-specific datasets, and fine-tuning expertise for specialized applications.
The first model under development, Genesis-Science-1, is being built in collaboration with U.S.-based open AI lab Arcee, DOE scientists, and other contributors.
The project is part of the broader Genesis Mission, a DOE effort focused on accelerating scientific discovery through advanced computing, AI, and research infrastructure. Officials said the initiative will help lower barriers to advanced AI capabilities and encourage collaboration across government, academia, and industry.
Earlier this year, DOE launched the Genesis Mission Consortium, a major public-private partnership to harness AI and accelerate scientific discovery across energy and emerging technology sectors.
