The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is expanding its Genesis Mission through a new partnership with artificial intelligence company Reflection AI, as the agency looks to accelerate scientific discovery and strengthen U.S. technological leadership using advanced AI capabilities.
Under a memorandum of understanding announced on May 22, Reflection AI will provide an open-source AI platform to support the DOE’s 17 national laboratories.
“Through this partnership, Reflection is prepared to equip America’s national laboratory scientists with an open source AI platform purpose-built for scientific discovery — accelerating data analysis at scale, enabling deeper insights that were previously out of reach and unlocking progress on the most challenging scientific problems,” the company said in an X post.
The platform will serve as a foundational AI layer for the Genesis Mission, a department-wide initiative launched last year to integrate AI across DOE’s science, energy and national security programs.
The partnership is expected to help national laboratory researchers analyze massive datasets faster, generate deeper scientific insights and advance complex research efforts across key national priorities.
DOE’s national laboratories are overseeing development of the broader AI platform, which will centralize scientific data across the country while integrating high-performance computing systems and next-generation quantum technologies.
The initiative supports 26 research and technology challenges, including fusion energy, biotechnology, nuclear data analysis, quantum systems and AI-enabled autonomous laboratories. More than 24 technology companies are participating in the effort.
