Study shows The Christ Hospital sets the bar for other heart programs nationally

November 9, 2017 – The Christ Hospital Health Network was named one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals® by IBM Watson Health. The study identifies hospitals that achieve superior clinical outcomes. This is the 14th consecutive year the hospital has earned this recognition.

The annual study, conducted by Truven Health Analytics, now part of IBM Watson Health, identifies the top U.S. hospitals for inpatient cardiovascular services. The study uses a balanced national scorecard of hospital performance metrics to identify the highest performing cardiovascular service lines in the nation.

Recognized as “Greater Cincinnati’s Heart Hospital℠”, The Christ Hospital offers the most advanced and experienced cardiovascular care in the region. Thousands of patients each year benefit from access to clinical programs dedicated to treating heart failure, heart valve disease, cardiac rhythm issues, difficult-to-manage hypertension, cardiac surgery, vascular disease and general heart disease management. Highly-focused programs provide unique treatments to patients who were previously left without treatment options, such as minimally-invasive aortic valve replacement to treat severe heart valve disease and ventricular assist device (VAD) implantation for end-stage heart failure.

The Christ Hospital is at the forefront of innovative cardiovascular care provided by multidisciplinary teams focused on the treatment of specific conditions. This specialized approach provides a platform to improve care and develop innovative treatments, such as new minimally invasive procedures to replace traditional complex surgeries. Our clinical teams are transforming care to provide better treatment options, safer techniques and faster recoveries for our patients. The Christ Hospital and The Lindner Research Center have introduced most of the new techniques in cardiovascular medicine, in the region, over the past 20 years.

The IBM Watson Health study analyzes Medicare and Medicaid data to determine the 50 top U.S. hospitals for heart care. The study, and subsequent analysis of the positive variances these leading cardiovascular service hospitals show, indicate an opportunity for a broader national impact for cardiovascular patients, should these results be replicated. In fact, if all cardiovascular providers in the U.S. performed at the level of The Christ Hospital and other top 50 hospitals:

  • Nearly 8,900 additional lives could be saved
  • Nearly 3,700 more bypass and angioplasty patients could be complication-free
  • More than $1.4 billion could be saved
