In 1991, Drew Horter formed an investment firm staffed only by himself and his assistant. Today, Horter Investment Management, LLC, a $1B asset firm, has expanded to more than 250 investment advisor representatives and more than 100 additional investment advisor representatives with 50 independent advisory firms.
Over the last 25 years, Horter has gone from managing $22 million to more than $1 billion today.
He has no intention of slowing down.
"We plan to add about 100 new advisors each year," says Horter, president of Horter Investment.
With this steady growth, Horter has expanded their offices with the construction of a national headquarters located on Mason Montgomery Road in Symmes Township.
The new 25,000-square-foot facility will house support staff for advisors who are registered in all 50 states and will work on a national level.
"When I envisioned our new headquarters, I didn’t want it to be the normal box along the side of the road," says Horter.
Designed by Over-the-Rhine’s Platte Architecture + Design, the new building has been given a stately look on the outside and is complete with modern conveniences within.
"It’s a blending of old school and new school," says Kurt Platte, founder of Platte Architecture + Design.
"The idea was to have something that felt substantial and established. It started along the lines of something more institutional to follow after the Biltmore-chateau styles of North Carolina."
Inside the headquarters will be much more than just office space.
"It was all designed with the good of our advisors and employees in mind," says Horter.
The building will have a state-of-the-art fitness center and an elegant terrace that can be used by employees to take breaks or to hold office functions.
Like most office buildings, there will be a conference room as well. However, Horter doesn’t plan to hold just normal day-to-day briefings there.
"We needed a space to hold trainings to educate both our advisors and clients," says Horter.
The firm also needed the space in order to give back to the community.
"Myself and our vice presidents are going to teach investment educational sessions for high school students and adults, too," says Horter.
"I don’t think there’s that much real discussion about financial planning for kids before they enter the workforce. By giving them knowledge and a heads-up on what to expect, these young adults can get ahead of the game and find themselves on better financial footing."
Even though many of Horter’s employees will move to the facility, the firm’s current office won’t be abandoned.
"Our current building will become our Cincinnati advisor office," says Horter. "This is going to give us a much bigger presence in Cincinnati."
While pursuing as many as 100 advisors dedicated to Cincinnati-based clients, Horter Investments will continue to strive to make steady returns for their clients around the country and here at home.
"We don’t like to follow old adages like ‘diversify and you’ll always be fine’ or ‘buy and hold,’ " says Horter. "We stand behind our low risk tactical managers – not a model where you just hope and pray that everything turns out alright."
The platform of managers at Horter Investment build strong portfolios by knowing why it will work.
"Our model is a sleeve of non-correlated portfolios designed for low to moderate risk with excellent performance over time," he says.
Horter Investment follows a risk-off model where investors follow market trends and reduce risk by selling existing high-risk positions to move the money to cash. Their tactical asset managers hedge risk in volatile markets by making informed decisions on future returns of volatile markets.
In 2014, Financial Advisor Magazine ranked Horter Investment Management No. 1 nationally in "Percentage of Growth in Assets" for firms with assets of $500 million to less than $1 billion and No. 6 nationally for firms with assets of $1 billion to less than $2 billion in 2015.
The new Horter Investment Management national headquarters is scheduled to open by summer this year.
