Each year, Broadway in Cincinnati endeavors to bring a balanced mix of New York-quality entertainment to Cincinnati, from revivals of familiar classics and family appropriate shows to popular favorites and edgier fare.

The 2016-17 season that begins at the Aronoff Center in September offers something that will appeal to multiple generations.

“We are incredibly proud to bring the best of Broadway to Cincinnati, and to be the theatrical organization that brings the most people to see live theater each year in the Tri-State area,” says Genevieve Miller Holt, general manager of Broadway in Cincinnati. “New York City is the home to some of the greatest theater on earth, but traveling to New York is not something most people can do on a regular basis. So we love being able to bring some of the best of what you can see in NYC to the Aronoff stage, at more affordable prices, to boot.”

“Broadway in Cincinnati has one of the largest numbers of Broadway series season subscribers in the country, which is especially impressive for a city of Cincinnati’s size. In fact, over the past 29 years, Cincinnatians have attended more than 3,200 Broadway in Cincinnati performances, including more than 550 performances of blockbusters like “Wicked,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Les Misérables” and “The Lion King.” Broadway in Cincinnati has also presented classics such as “West Side Story” and “Evita,” as well as many popular recent shows, including “Jersey Boys” and “The Book of Mormon.”

“We’re so grateful for how Cincinnatians support us by subscribing each year,” Miller Holt says.

She has a special place in her heart for a new production of “The Sound of Music” that opens the season September 27-October 9.

“It is a gorgeous new stage production that has been touring the country to ecstatic reviews, and I think it will bring new life to the show for our audience members, whether it’s their first time, or a familiar favorite,” Miller Holt says.

Other shows include:

• “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder” (Season option, January 3-8) Winner of the Best Musical Tony in 2014, it is a devilishly fun show about an everyday guy who learns he’s eighth in line to a great family fortune, so he sets about knocking off each distant relative standing between him and the inheritance. “Each of the ill-fated family members – male or female, young or old – is played by the same actor, which makes for a bit of a madcap romp,” says Miller Holt. “It’s deliciously entertaining.”

• “Something Rotten!” (February 21-March 5) tells the story of two playwright brothers in Shakespeare’s time who try to get a leg up on the Bard by consulting a soothsayer of mediocre talents to learn what Shakespeare’s biggest hit will be, and what the future of the theater holds.  Shakespeare’s biggest hit? Something along the lines of “omelet”… it’s not quite clear. And the future of theater? A musical! Hilarity ensues. “I laughed so hard at this show, and I would have turned around after it was over and watched it all over again if I could have,” Miller Holt says.

• “Matilda” (April 4-16) At first glance it might seem like a family-oriented title, it’s actually a show that’s deeply compelling for audiences of all ages. A dark comedy based on the Roald Dahl book of the same name, “Matilda” tells of a fiercely intelligent and brave girl in a messy world of adults. It’s a joy to watch, and truly appealing for multiple generations, according to Miller Holt.

• “Beautiful – The Carole King Musical” (May 2-14) This tells the story of the songwriting legend from her spunky years as a hugely successful teen through the start of her solo career. She and husband Gerry Goffin, along with friends and competitors Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, wrote the soundtrack to a generation, though not everyone knows just how many everyday favorite songs were actually written by these talented folks. “King’s story is a fascinating and fun one to watch,” says Miller Holt. “And the musical is imbued with the friendly and fearless spirit that her fans know and love.”
