(US and Canada) Dr. Seth Berl has recently joined the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as the Deputy Chief Data Officer. Previously, he served as the Chief Technology Officer at GovSmart, Inc., where he applied his expertise in technology, scientific research, and academia to identify products and services, build partnerships, and lead innovation with a strategic vision for the future.

Berl holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in experimental atomic physics from the University of Virginia, and dual B.S. degrees in electrical engineering and physics, with a minor in mathematics, from Old Dominion University. His career includes working on projects led by various government agencies such as the Army, Navy, Air Force, Special Operations Command, DIA, DARPA, Department of Energy, NASA, Health & Human Services, Department of Commerce, and NSF.

Before his tenure at GovSmart, Berl founded and operated a technology consulting company with clients including Fortune 500 companies. Hi's interests span high-performance computing, data science, AI/ML, IoT, tactical/mission edge, enterprise networks, storage systems, cybersecurity, software development, embedded systems, aerospace/defense satellite communications, research & development, and general problem-solving.

"I am excited to share that I will be starting a new position as the Deputy Chief Data Officer for the U.S. Department of Energy. My primary focus will be driving a cohesive technology and implementation strategy for the DOE Enterprise Data Management program," shared Berl in a LinkedIn post.
