Michael Sulmeyer Nominated Assistant Secretary of Defense for Cyber Policy

Sulmeyer currently serves as the Principal Cyber Advisor to the Secretary of the Army.

U.S. President Joe Biden has nominated Michael Sulmeyer to be the first Assistant Secretary of Defense for Cyber Policy within the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).

Sulmeyer currently serves as the Principal Cyber Advisor to the Secretary of the Army, offering guidance on all cyber-related matters, including readiness, capabilities, and strategy. 

Prior to joining the U.S. Army, Sulmeyer held various positions within the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the National Security Council, and U.S. Cyber Command.

Beyond his government roles, Sulmeyer was the Director of the Cybersecurity Project at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. 

Additionally, he has taught at the University of Texas School of Law and served as a Senior Fellow at Georgetown University’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology.

He obtained his Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Juris Doctor (J.D.) degrees from Stanford University, and his Master of Arts (M.A.) in War Studies from King's College London. Sulmeyer earned his doctorate in Politics from Oxford University.

Earlier this month, DoD announced Radha Iyengar Plumb as its new Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer (CDAO). Plumb will replace Craig Martell, who was appointed the department’s first CDAO.
