Data, AI, and technology executives gather for CDO Magazine’s Dallas Executive Boardroom Dinner on October 22 at Mignon Prime Steaks, Seafood and Cocktails in Plano, Texas.

What would AI be capable of if it truly understood how a business operates?

That question was central to CDO Magazine’s Dallas Executive Boardroom Dinner on October 22 at Mignon Prime Steaks, Seafood and Cocktails in Plano, Texas, where data, AI, and technology executives from financial services, retail, aviation, healthcare, and other industries exchanged experiences with enterprise AI.

The focus went beyond familiar productivity applications. Executives considered what knowledge AI needs to understand an organization’s unique operations, how to keep that information accurate as the business changes, and what it takes to translate increasingly capable technology into meaningful business outcomes.

Business Context Is Becoming the Differentiator

For enterprise AI, access to information is only part of the challenge. The Dallas executives considered how systems can better understand the relationships, processes, and institutional knowledge that shape business decisions.

Among the questions raised was what organizations would want AI to accomplish if it could understand their specific business context, rather than simply generate documents, summarize meetings, or perform isolated tasks.

Sandeep Ahluwalia, Citi Bank Citibank – Global Technology & Transformation Head, shared two takeaways from the exchange:

Contextual Intelligence Unlocks True Business Value: High-quality data is table stakes. The real enterprise differentiator is embedding domain expertise and business context directly into frontline workflows, enabling organizations to turn AI investments into measurable business outcomes.

Operating Models, Workforce, and Governance Drive Scalable ROI: Sustainable AI ROI is fundamentally a human and operational transformation. Success requires empowering the workforce with new ways of working and evolving governance from a control mechanism into an enabler that provides trusted guardrails for scaling AI confidently across the enterprise.

Turning AI Investments Into Business Outcomes

Another important question for the Dallas executives was how organizations can move beyond experimentation and determine whether their AI investments are delivering meaningful value.

The discussion addressed where AI has performed well, where incomplete or changing business information has limited its effectiveness, and how organizations can make the knowledge available to AI more accurate and useful.

Prabhu Govindaraju, Ally Senior Director, Data Management, shared a few key that takeaways reinforced the importance of moving beyond AI experimentation to deliver scalable, sustainable business value:

• Context is everything: Trusted, relevant data and context are foundational to effective AI.

• From POC to Production: The real value lies in operationalizing AI responsibly and at scale.

• ROI that matters: Success is measured by tangible business outcomes and lasting impact.

Engineering AI for a Business That Keeps Changing

As organizations introduce AI into more complex business operations, keeping systems aligned with changing information and priorities presents another challenge.

The Dallas executives considered how enterprises can provide AI with the right knowledge and context while avoiding approaches that become difficult to maintain as technology evolves.

Matthew Halliday, 4Minds Chief Product Officer, who moderated the discussion, reflected on the technical and operational questions raised by participants:

Graph, ontology, context, harnesses and business objectives were the talk of the night. A spirited conversation that covered: is unstructured data easier to handle than structured data now? What does it mean to get your business data into an AI agent? How do we validate whether the agent is even worthwhile?

A couple of key takeaways were :

  • Vibe reviewing of vibe coded/created content could be the death of your AI initiatives. We still have to bring engineering discipline to the way we deploy agents. Testing, testing, testing and eval frameworks are key.
  • Knowledge Graphs are key to understanding your business data, its structure, taxonomy and ontology. Focus on the surrounding infrastructure that doesn’t tie you down to a single model. Models have a shelf life like milk. Velocity of change is orders of magnitude higher than ever before.

The honesty, transparency, and insight offered by those who are figuring out how to implement these AI technologies into tangible business outcomes was refreshing and innovating.
