Sept. 29, 2022, marked the first in-person CyberSecurity Midwest Summit hosted by CDOMagazine and ComSpark. The event witnessed industry-leading security experts and data executives sharing their best practices and experiences regarding cybersecurity.

In this session, Vernovis SVP Mike Fulton engages the audience by delivering valuable insights through his keynote speech on mitigating security risks in the multi-cloud world. While asking for an audience poll on the impact of cybercrime in 2021, he comments, “The profitability of cybercrime is more than all of the drug markets combined and causes more damage than all the natural disasters that we shall see.”

Fulton then discusses the acronym STUD-E to explain the strategies to alleviate security risks in the cloud:

• Strategy: Organizations must take a step back to understand where to invest time and energy before diving in. Adding multiple footprints from various providers will only add to complexities, so strategizing is critical.

• Tools: It is critical to put the right tools in place and layer them as necessary. 

• Update: Being proactive about technology updates massively improves security outcomes.

• Data Protection: Protecting data to recover quickly from an attack makes data protection a key element in a cybersecurity strategy.

• Education: Educating the organization on cybersecurity challenges is crucial to fight the battle against cybercrime.

“It is important that we as a cybersecurity community continue to come to events like this and learn from each other to continue to fight the attackers,” Fulton says in conclusion.
