(Europe) Paul Jones, Director of Data Analytics and AI at Baringa, speaks with Robert Lutton, Sandhill Consultants Vice President, about hiring and nurturing the right talent, data strategy focus areas, and building a data-driven culture.
According to Jones, organizations need to focus on the following while building teams:
Being clear about what the organization is trying to do and the skill sets required for it.
Finding and attracting people. Consider the value proposition that would inspire someone to join the organization.
Being open to developing capability. Organizations can hire junior talent and develop them with the help of experienced mentors.
Jones notes that although organizations may sometimes need external support to solve specific challenges, playing the long game with talent is essential.
Next, he points out two key elements to focus on while creating a data strategy:
Data strategy can be used to engage with people on the business side, raising their understanding of data’s positive impact.
Business outcomes need to align with the data strategy.
When asked if data-driven culture is the way forward for the organization and its clients, Jones says that being data-driven is a core part of Baringa. He adds that client engagement is about helping them achieve better outcomes, and the rewards will come from just doing the right thing.
Regarding the importance of a data-driven culture, Baringa says it helps put outcomes at the heart of everything. He also emphasizes that a data-driven culture means:
The ability to challenge the data leader about outcomes.
Delivering value as you go and not having to wait.
Investing in the foundations to get full value.
