VIDEO | Fair Haven Community Health Care Data Director: We Have To Be the Cheerleaders for Change

(US and Canada) Anthony Brockman, Fair Haven Community Health Care Data Director, speaks with Savio Rodrigues, Trianz VP of Client Partnership USA and CDO Magazine Editorial Board Member, in a video interview about the reasons for the high failure rate of analytics, AI, and big data projects, and the data-driven approaches in the health sciences.

Brockman says the reason for the high failure rate of analytics, AI, and big data projects comes back to the organizational culture and leadership. He notes that an organization’s culture and its leadership must support change management and get everybody going in the same direction.

Elaborating further, Brockman suggests that the IT leadership needs to be the cheerleader and have clarity around the people, process, and technology. They need to answer questions for other leaders who will trickle the message down to the rest of the organization.

Sharing a couple of the current and upcoming IT trends, he highlights:

  • The push for data literacy and data governance

  • The ease of use and human-centered design of modern analytics platforms

Giving input on directing data-driven approaches in health sciences, he offers the following advice:

  • Do not underestimate the nontechnical work related to the process and the people.

  • Start with governance because it is extremely hard to be data driven.

  • Start with use cases because there has to be a lot of clarity around what and why something is being done.

When asked about a unique usage of data to benefit health care, Brockman mentions the social determinants of health, such as access to food, a nonviolent living atmosphere, and parks, especially in underserved communities. He adds that people don’t generally understand the impact these have on health.
