The U.S. Army is launching a generative AI pilot this summer, according to Jennifer Swanson, the Army’s deputy assistant secretary for data, engineering, and software.

The pilot aims to explore how the army could leverage generative AI beyond backend operations to explore other potential use cases. It’s not solely about expanding archives and videos; we’re exploring additional possibilities, Swanson said while speaking at a technology summit in Arlington.

She also notes that the army also remains concerned about the risks and limitations of the technology.

Last month, the Army’s Chief Information Officer revealed that the department is nearing the release of a new directive aimed at guiding the utilization of generative artificial intelligence, particularly focusing on large language models (LLMs).
