Thomson Reuters has rolled out a broader vision for CoCounsel, its professional-grade generative AI (GenAI) assistant, which now integrates across its platforms in legal, tax, risk and fraud, and media sectors to transform and streamline workflows. It ultimately aims to increase efficiency and enhance the overall quality of work.

"Our unique combination of resources means we can deliver on our vision of providing professionals a new, human-centric point of access to our suite of Thomson Reuters products. As our products continue to expand and improve, the customer experience will remain centered in our GenAI assistant as CoCounsel learns new skills and capabilities - unlocking productivity and becoming the way professionals work," says David Wong, Thomson Reuters Chief Product Officer.

New capabilities of CoCounsel

The company has introduced new GenAI capabilities to CoCounsel by incorporating it with Westlaw Edge UK and Checkpoint Edge. This move enhances CoCounsel’s ability to aid in complex tasks, backed by Thomson Reuters' content. Moreover, CoCounsel now connects with Microsoft 365 applications, improving processes like research, drafting, and review.

CoCounsel operates as an efficient AI team member, performing tasks with an understanding of natural language and maintaining workflow context across various user tasks. By integrating GenAI capabilities, CoCounsel can now offer faster, high-quality results, ensuring data security and boosting productivity.

It continues its partnership with OpenAI, leveraging its LLM GPT-4 to power the model. This collaboration aims to enhance creativity and productivity in knowledge workers by automating routine tasks and facilitating complex problem-solving.

CoCounsel is now part of Westlaw Precision and Practical Law Dynamic Tool Set, bringing GenAI to the daily tools of tax and legal professionals. The AI assistant helps perform sophisticated tax and legal research, providing quick, reliable answers and detailed insights into key cases and legislation.

The implementation of CoCounsel in industry settings, as demonstrated by Ford Motor Company, showcases its capability to revolutionize operations by streamlining various functions from legal to manufacturing. The company plans to continue expanding its skills across all business segments, promising an evolving platform that adapts to professional needs.

Availability and rollout

CoCounsel’s new features are set to launch in different regions, with Westlaw Edge UK already available in the UK. The rollout of Checkpoint Edge with CoCounsel and integrations with Microsoft 365 is slated to begin in the USA and UK by summer 2024.
