Alaska is preparing to launch a new AI-powered mobile app that will serve as a centralized hub for accessing state government services, Chief Information Officer Bill Smith told StateScoop.
Expected to go live within weeks, the app will feature an integrated AI assistant designed to help users quickly locate the services they need.
“We really learned that the mobile app pathway has a lot more opportunity for making interaction with the government easier than maybe we even anticipated,” Smith said during the National Association of State CIOs midyear conference.
The app will initially offer around 50 services currently available through the state’s online portal, myAlaska and is expected to expand to over 200 in future updates.
Smith emphasized that testing the app’s AI chatbot took the most time. “We were laser-focused on accuracy and making sure it was the most efficient way to get people where they needed to go,” he said, adding that the app relies only on publicly available data, avoiding privacy concerns.
Describing the project as a “learning experience”, Smith said the app could eventually become a primary way residents engage with the state, pointing to its potential to transform digital government access in Alaska.
