The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) is calling for public input as it works to revise the National Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Strategic Plan, aiming to guide federal AI R&D priorities for the next three to five years.
“The goal is to ensure the United States secures its position as the global leader in AI by advancing research and development that accelerates innovation, strengthens national and economic security, and promotes human well-being,” OSTP said in its official Request for Information (RFI).
The federal AI strategy was first introduced in 2016 and later updated by the Trump administration in 2019, which emphasized public-private partnerships. Congress then codified regular updates through the National AI Initiative Act of 2020.
In a significant policy shift on January 20, 2025, President Trump revoked the Biden administration’s AI executive order and signed Executive Order 14179: Removing Barriers to American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence, which aims to streamline regulations and promote U.S. AI leadership with reduced federal oversight.
As part of the transition, the White House reopened a public comment period on a proposed National AI Action Plan. Topics include responsible model development, cybersecurity, data privacy, national security, innovation, regulatory streamlining, and global collaboration.
Officials say feedback from researchers, companies, civil society groups, and the public will be used to shape a roadmap that balances innovation with accountability, ensuring the U.S. remains at the forefront of the global AI race.
