The War Department has signed agreements with eight major technology companies — SpaceX, OpenAI, Google, NVIDIA, Reflection AI, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, and Oracle, to deploy advanced AI technologies across classified military networks.
The initiative will accelerate the department’s transition toward becoming an “AI-first fighting force” by integrating frontier AI capabilities into Impact Level 6 and Impact Level 7 network environments, which support classified operations. Officials said the move will improve data synthesis, situational awareness, and decision-making for military personnel operating in complex combat environments.
The effort aligns with the department’s AI Acceleration Strategy, focused on warfighting, intelligence, and enterprise operations. The department said its GenAI.mil platform has already seen rapid adoption, with more than 1.3 million personnel using the system and deploying hundreds of thousands of AI agents within five months.
Officials also emphasized plans to avoid long-term vendor lock-in by maintaining access to a broad ecosystem of AI providers. The department said strengthening domestic AI leadership remains critical to U.S. national security and future defense readiness.
