The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has released an updated Artificial Intelligence Strategy, outlining its vision to harness AI as a mission-enabling technology that improves care, benefits, and services for Veterans.
The strategy highlights five priorities:
Reimagine major workflows using AI and automation
Invest in foundational data and infrastructure for AI
Establish an AI-ready workforce with both deep technical experts and widespread AI literacy
Increase Veterans’ trust and confidence in VA’s utilization of AI with transparent and effective governance and use case management
“VA aims to be an industry leader in its use of effective, reliable, and safe AI tools. We will deliver measurable improvements in speed, quality, efficiency and accuracy, fundamentally transforming the delivery of healthcare and benefits for Veterans,” it said.
According to Kimberly M., Deputy Chief AI Officer and Deputy CTO for AI at VA, thoughtful use of AI will enable automation of routine tasks, such as summarizing documents, routing information, and handling common inquiries, freeing staff to focus on more complex and critical needs. This includes timely clinical care, personalized benefits navigation, and addressing challenging customer service requests.
“Our goal is to lead in effective, reliable, and safe AI, delivering measurable improvements in speed, quality, and efficiency for Veterans,” she said in a LinkedIn post.
