The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced that it has fully cleared its pending applications for the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA) by deploying AI to accelerate the review process.
CHAMPVA is a healthcare benefits program serving over 900,000 eligible individuals. “Veterans around the country knew it was taking far too long to process CHAMPVA applications, and that meant delayed coverage for their loved ones. We listened, and now the application backlog that caused so many unnecessary delays has been wiped out,” VA Secretary Doug Collins said in a press release. VA said it cleared the backlog through a two-fold strategy: offering overtime to CHAMPVA processors for rapid cleanup and introducing automation and process improvements to maintain efficiency. This ensures Veterans’ families no longer face unnecessary delays in accessing their health care benefits. Over time, according to VA, automation will further accelerate processing.
In December, the VA will finish transitioning to a more automated system designed to speed up CHAMPVA application reviews. Additionally, more than 90% of medical and pharmacy claims are already handled electronically within days, ensuring faster and more reliable payments.
