The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued revised guidance on AI-assisted inventions, formally rescinding Biden-era policy and aligning with the Trump administration’s Executive Order on artificial intelligence.
The order, “Removing Barriers to American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence,” directed federal agencies to revise prior policies to better support U.S. competitiveness in AI.
“This order revokes certain existing AI policies and directives that act as barriers to American AI innovation, clearing a path for the United States to act decisively to retain global leadership in artificial intelligence,” USPTO said.
It also states that the United States aims to sustain and strengthen its global leadership in AI to advance human flourishing, bolster economic competitiveness, and protect national security.
Within 180 days of the order, the the President for Science and Technology (APST), the Special Advisor for AI and Crypto, and the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (APNSA), working with senior White House economic and domestic policy officials, the Director of the Office of Management
and Budget (OMB) Director, and other relevant agency heads, must develop and submit to the President an action plan to carry out this policy.
