The U.S. State Department has announced plans to equip diplomats with artificial intelligence (AI) tools and upgrade its data infrastructure as part of its newly released Enterprise Data & AI Strategy.
The plan outlines two main goals: advancing “cutting-edge statecraft for 21st-century challenges” and accelerating “technological adoption through strategic enablement.” Key initiatives include deploying AI tools such as AI. State, a repository of AI resources, and StateChat, the department’s first generative AI chatbot.
“The Department recognizes the profound opportunity to harness data and AI to redefine diplomacy. With our combined Enterprise Data and AI Strategy, we are poised to unlock a new era of diplomatic innovation,” Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Michael Rigas, said.
Diplomats will gain access to dynamic analytics platforms for optimizing foreign assistance, agentic AI systems to streamline administrative workflows and crisis response, and data-driven research tools for intelligence gathering.
To support these efforts, the department will expand its digital infrastructure with multi-cloud platforms, zero-trust security, and classified AI deployments, alongside training programs that integrate AI education and simulations into diplomat development.
“I call on every member of our Department to embrace this Strategy and actively contribute to its implementation. Our efforts to infuse data and AI into American statecraft will be guided by bold innovation and an unshakeable commitment to putting America First,” Rigas adds.
