U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo announced the creation of the US AI Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC), which will bring together AI creators and users, academics, government and industry researchers, and civil society organizations to promote the development and deployment of safe and trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI).

The consortium comprises over 200 member companies and organizations at the forefront of developing and utilizing cutting-edge AI systems and hardware.

This includes leading corporations, startups, civil society groups, and academic teams shaping the foundational understanding of AI’s societal transformation. Additionally, it encompasses representatives from professions deeply involved in AI usage today.

Apple, Amazon, Bank of America, Salesforce, IBM, Microsoft, Mastercard, Meta, Wells Fargo & Company, OpenAI, FAIR Institute, Pfizer, and PwC among others are in the member list.

The consortium will operate within the U.S. AI Safety Institute (USAISI) and will play a role in advancing key initiatives outlined in President Biden’s Executive Order on AI.

This includes developing guidelines for red-teaming (ethical hacker team), capability assessments, risk management, safety and security measures, and watermarking synthetic content.

“The US government has a significant role to play in setting the standards and developing the tools we need to mitigate the risks and harness the immense potential of AI. President Biden directed us to pull every lever to accomplish two key goals: set safety standards and protect our innovation ecosystem. That’s precisely what the U.S. AI Safety Institute Consortium is set up to help us do,” Secretary Raimondo said.

Raimondo also announced Elizabeth Kelly will serve as the inaugural Director and Elham Tabassi Chief Technology Officer of the AI Safety Institute (AISI).
