The U.S. Department of Education has finalized a new policy prioritizing artificial intelligence in discretionary grant competitions, signaling a stronger federal push to integrate emerging technologies into classrooms.
The rule largely reflects the original proposal issued last year but incorporates feedback from more than 300 public comments.
It establishes a supplemental priority encouraging programs that promote the responsible use of AI in education, including teacher training, student exposure to AI tools, and workforce-focused skill development.
Under the policy, grant funding may be directed toward initiatives that embed AI and computer science into curricula, expand access to certifications, and use AI to personalize learning and improve outcomes. The department also highlighted AI’s potential to streamline administrative tasks and enhance school operations.
While many stakeholders supported the move, citing the need to prepare students for a technology-driven economy, others raised concerns about AI’s impact on student development, privacy, and data security. Some urged delaying adoption until safeguards are proven.
The department declined to impose new federal mandates, instead leaving implementation decisions to states and local districts while emphasizing ethical use, accessibility, and age-appropriate deployment.
