The latest allocations from the Technology Modernization Fund, which stands just short of US$50 million, are aimed at bolstering agency initiatives in harnessing generative artificial intelligence, enhancing security measures, and refining digital services, according to a recent announcement by the General Services Administration (GSA).

Among these investments, the Department of State (DOS) stands out, securing two allocations to strengthen IT systems for safeguarding sensitive data and integrating Generative AI capabilities to empower DOS’ global workforce.

The State Department manages over 270 diplomatic posts globally, where professionals grapple with a staggering flow of information, including an average of 6,300 diplomatic cables per day, along with numerous media summaries and reports.

With the infusion of $18.2 million from the Technology Modernization Fund, DOS endeavors to leverage safe, secure, and responsible Generative AI to empower its widely distributed workforce, fostering enhanced efficiency and facilitating improved access to information resources.

“This investment marks a pivotal moment to reshape how DOS conducts diplomacy and promotes American interests worldwide. This project will enable our diplomats to focus on essential analysis and strategic engagement, boosting our efficiency and strengthening America’s global diplomatic advantage,”  Dr. Matthew Graviss, DOS Chief Data and AI Officer said.

Through the integration of GenAI, the DOS aims to streamline data processing, allowing personnel to swiftly extract insights and dedicate more time to achieving significant diplomatic outcomes. This TMF investment will be instrumental in formulating an interagency playbook to ensure the responsible adoption of GenAI practices across government agencies.
