The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has unveiled its first-ever Enterprise Data Strategy, designed to enhance key activities and applications that support informed decision-making for its critical missions.

This strategy, spanning fiscal years 2025 to 2028, serves as a cornerstone for managing the entire data lifecycle, promoting ethical and appropriate data use, ensuring robust security, and advancing analytics capabilities.

“Our Data Strategy ensures DOE’s compliance with key legislative statutes, national security requirements, and administrative orders, including but not limited to the Foundations for Evidence-Based Policymaking Act (Evidence Act) of 2018, the Federal Data Strategy, the Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence (EO 14110) and the 2022 Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) memorandum Ensuring Free, Immediate, and Equitable Access to Federally Funded Research,” DOE said in a blog post.

It also serves as a critical framework aimed at advancing data practices throughout the DOE complex. It seeks to harness the full potential of the department’s data, empowering the DOE’s missions and serving the nation for years to come.

“The Strategy also aligns with Artificial Intelligence (AI) Executive Orders to ensure cohesion with the forthcoming DOE AI Strategy. Serving as a distinct yet complementary framework, this Data Strategy ensures data governance, security, and preparedness in support of and in concert with AI governance and implementation,” DOE further said.
