U.S. Department of Commerce
The U.S. Department of Commerce is rolling out agentic artificial intelligence to enhance workforce productivity, improve enterprise coordination, and strengthen mission delivery, according to Acting Chief Technology Officer Matheus Passos, MeriTalk reported.
Speaking during a GovExec webinar, Passos said the department views agentic AI as a workforce augmentation tool aligned with its broader “One Commerce” integration initiative, which aims to unify operations across its federated structure.
“We believe that [agentic] AI, at least for the Department of Commerce, is going to be a great tool for us to plus up our workforce, right? Not replace anyone, but enhance them. It will make them better. It will make them smarter. It will make their jobs easier,” Passos said.
The department is piloting nine use cases focused on structured workflows such as acquisition support, project management, and customer relationship management.
Passos noted that agentic AI can help bridge silos across agencies including the Census Bureau, USPTO, and NIST.
“Agentic AI is a great tool for that. It’s kind of a great equalizer … it can look across the organization and try to start coordinating efforts in areas where people have completely different missions,” he added.
