The U.S. Office of Personnel Management has issued a guidebook that summarizes information for federal agencies on existing pay, leave, and workforce flexibilities available for AI specialists and other key government technology roles.
The guidance also outlines the options and initiatives accessible to agencies for recruiting and retaining AI and related expertise, along with additional resources.
These options can also be utilized by agencies for broader talent recruitment and retention efforts, extending to other critical positions within the agencies.
“Agencies can use most of the flexibilities and authorities summarized in the attached guidance without OPM approval. For the few flexibilities that require OPM approval-special rates, critical pay, and waivers of the recruitment, relocation, and retention incentive payment limits—we stand ready to assist agencies and respond to their requests for enhanced compensation tools,” the OPM said in a memo.
This comes at a time when federal agencies are exploring AI use cases and are looking to hire AI talent. Last month, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced plans to hire around 50 AI experts in 2024.
The newly established DHS "AI Corps" draws inspiration from the U.S. Digital Service, assembling teams dedicated to responsibly leveraging this innovative technology across key areas of homeland security.
These strategic efforts include combating fentanyl, addressing child sexual exploitation and abuse, facilitating immigration services, ensuring travel security, bolstering critical infrastructure, and enhancing cybersecurity.
