The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is preparing to release five artificial intelligence use cases for security control overlays aimed at addressing risks tied to the development and use of AI systems.
According to a concept paper published on August 14, the use cases will cover generative AI, predictive AI, single- and multi-agent systems and developer-specific controls.
“Each use case represents a category of common basic scenarios and addresses specific cybersecurity risks. As appropriate, each use case will address the protection of the model, model artifacts, related
information assets within the deployment infrastructure, and the security of the output,” NIST stated.
The overlays are designed to complement NIST’s Cybersecurity Framework Profile for AI, now under development with input from experts and community workshops.
NIST emphasized the overlays will focus on protecting confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information while targeting threats unique to AI systems.
To foster collaboration, NIST is launching a Slack channel for experts to engage in the overlays’ development.
