MITRE Publishes AI Advisory for Incoming Administration

MITRE recently published a report providing recommendations to the incoming administration on establishing a robust regulatory framework for AI security and safety over the next four years and beyond.

“By establishing a comprehensive and effective regulatory framework for AI security and safety, the incoming administration can ensure a balanced approach to technological progression, ethical considerations, and public trust. Doing so will not only reinforce the United States’ international leadership in AI but also unlock its transformative potential to address a wide range of critical challenges,” MITRE said in the report.

MITRE, a federally funded organization managing research and development centers for various agencies, presents nine recommendations for the upcoming presidential term, advocating for executive endorsement of an AI Science and Technology Intelligence framework.

This framework would survey adversarial strategies through open sources and conduct red-teaming exercises on public and commercial AI systems and operations.

Recommendations include enhancing communication and collaboration between policymakers and those implementing AI strategies; collaborating with stakeholders in a repeatable AI assurance process to ensure that the use of AI within their specific contexts meets necessary safety and performance standards; and establishing a National AI Center of Excellence (NAICE).

Earlier in April, MITRE inaugurated a new facility focused on examining potential risks associated with government utilization of artificial intelligence.
