Federal judges are looking at an AI Task Force to develop stronger guidance on the responsible use of artificial intelligence within the judiciary, building on interim measures introduced earlier this year to ensure transparency, accountability, and judicial integrity, Meritalk reported.
“With the increasing use of AI platforms such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google Gemini, and integration of AI functions in legal research tools, AI use has become more common in the legal landscape. AI presents a host of opportunities and potential benefits for the judicial branch, as well as concerns,” Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, wrote in a letter to the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts (AO) Director Judge Robert Conrad.
The move comes after incidents in which two federal judges issued orders containing AI-generated errors, prompting the federal judiciary to release new guidance on the responsible and secure use and procurement of AI tools.
Grassley said the AI Task Force is evaluating — and may recommend — the creation of an online AI information-sharing platform for the Judiciary.
