DOJ Seeks Public Comment on the Use of AI in Criminal Justice

The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) within the U.S. Department of Justice is seeking public feedback regarding the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) within the criminal justice system.

In a notice published in the Federal Register, the NIJ indicated its intention to gather input to shape a forthcoming report on the application of AI in the criminal justice domain.

Interested parties are invited to submit their comments within 30 days following the publication of the document.

“NIJ plans to review the input provided by the public as it drafts a report responsive to section 7.1(b) of Executive Order 14110. All materials will be shared with U.S. Government staff or U.S. Government contractors for evaluation purposes. NIJ does not plan to publish the input received, however, all materials submitted are subject to public release under the Freedom of Information Act,” the notice said.

In February this year, the DoJ launched a new initiative called ‘Justice AI’ to study the impact of emerging technologies like AI on the US Justice System.

The Department will soon initiate consultations with different stakeholders. The discussions will contribute to a report for President Biden by the year's end, focusing on the utilization of AI within the department.
