The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) is building a prototype cloud platform called the Fangorn project, to modernize the legacy mainframe systems relied upon by warfighters.

It is set to become a pioneering cloud platform purpose-built to modernize legacy mainframe systems for U.S. warfighters — enhancing efficiency, scalability and security.

This innovative solution provides a low-risk path to modernization by integrating AI-driven data management and analytics capabilities, eliminating the need for the Defense Department to maintain outdated applications built on legacy codebases such as COBOL.

“Fangorn represents a paradigm shift in mainframe management. By combining the strengths of the mainframe with the agility of the cloud and the power of AI, Fangorn delivers a truly innovative platform that drives unprecedented levels of performance, scalability and efficiency,” Justin Sollenberger, DISA J-9 Mainframe Line of Business division chief, said in a LinkedIn article posted by DISA.

Earlier this year, DISA introduced an updated data strategy outlining its vision for optimizing data usage over the next two years.

The Fiscal Years (FY) 2025-2027 Data Strategy builds on DISA’s ongoing efforts to enhance data management and utilization.

The agency’s previous FY 2022-2024 Data Strategy Implementation Plan focused on overhauling its data architecture to create a more unified system.
