The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) reported a nearly 31% increase in artificial intelligence (AI) use cases from 2024 to 2025, driven largely by law enforcement and administrative deployments.
In its 2025 AI inventory, the department listed 315 use cases, including 188 active systems, reflecting what it described as growing collaboration to accelerate AI adoption.
Law enforcement tools account for about 62% of deployed use cases, while administrative and IT systems make up roughly 23%. However, most pilot and pre-deployment efforts are focused on administrative and IT functions.
The FBI alone reported 50 AI use cases in 2025, up from 19 last year, with 27 supporting law enforcement. Nine are classified as high impact, enabling capabilities such as identity verification, biometric matching, language translation, and vehicle tracking.
Moreover, under a Trump administration directive, high-impact systems must meet federal risk management standards by April 2026. The DOJ acknowledged that required assessments remain underway and that some inventory details were withheld under information-sharing restrictions.
