The Donald Trump-administration has decided to rebrand the AI Safety Institute as the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI).

The new center, housed within the National Institute of Standards and Technology, will continue evaluating AI systems’ capabilities and risks, developing best practices, and serving as a liaison between government and industry.

“For far too long, censorship and regulations have been used under the guise of national security. Innovators will no longer be limited by these standards. CAISI will evaluate and enhance U.S. innovation of these rapidly developing commercial AI systems while ensuring they remain secure to our national security standards,” Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, stated in a press release.

The rebranding comes as the Trump administration puts its stamp on AI policy, having already repealed President Biden’s AI executive order and signed a new one.

The AI Safety Institute, housed within the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), was established to evaluate the capabilities, risks and vulnerabilities of AI systems.

It works with the industry to develop voluntary standards and best practices, aiming to ensure the safe, secure and trustworthy development of AI technologies.
