Joint Interagency Task Force 401 (JIATF-401) is using agent AI to analyze data from a counter-drone exercise at Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona, according to an October 1 DefenseScoop report.

JIATF-401, the Department of Defense (DoD) task force focused on countering drones, plans to use the analysis to support procurement decisions on counter-drone equipment tested during the exercise.

JIATF-401 is doing this by putting the test data into a central repository called a “tech arsenal” and using AI agents to sort through it and compare systems tested at different times.

Brig. Gen. Matt Ross, the task force’s director, told DefenseScoop that the task force expects to make acquisition decisions within days, rather than weeks.

Standardized Data Helps AI Compare Systems

The approach builds on standardized testing introduced across DOD, Ross told DefenseScoop.

Systems tested during Falcon Peak 26.2, the U.S. military exercise testing commercial counter-drone technologies, were measured against the same performance standards, allowing JIATF-401 to compare results across vendors.

The task force plans to share the results with military services and federal government partners.

Ross gave DefenseScoop an example of how the system works.

Users can ask the tech arsenal to find systems that meet specific requirements, such as a particular detection range and price, and then rank the tested systems by performance. Ross also cautioned that the results were only as good as the data entered into the system.

Data Quality Becomes Critical to AI-Assisted Decisions

For chief data officers (CDOs), the project shows how data quality and standardization can shape AI-assisted decision-making.

An AI agent can compare large amounts of information quickly, but its results depend on whether the underlying data is consistent, complete and structured well enough to support those comparisons.

The Falcon Peak approach also shows why AI governance matters when it comes to operations that require high-value decisions.

CDOs need to help establish clear standards for the data entering their systems, maintain its quality and ensure that decision-makers can understand where the information came from.
