The U.S. Coast Guard has unveiled a new Digital Transformation (DTX) Strategy to modernize operations, strengthen mission readiness, and accelerate decision-making through improved use of data, automation, and artificial intelligence.
Designed as a servicewide roadmap, the strategy seeks to sharpen the Coast Guard’s operational edge by reducing administrative burdens and enabling personnel to spend more “minutes on mission.”

Key highlights of the DTX Strategy:
1. Automate administrative work to reduce manual workload and free personnel for mission-critical tasks
2. Accelerate decisions through improved access to near-real-time operational data
3. Enhance coordination across mission areas, units, and external partners through better data sharing
4. Modernize field operations with integrated digital systems and mobile tools
5. Strengthen workforce readiness through AI, automation, and digital literacy training
A key example of the transformation includes equipping boarding officers with handheld mobile devices that replace paper-based forms and manual data entry, allowing crews to capture information in real time without returning to shore-based systems.
“Digital transformation is a cultural shift in how we operate,” said Brian Campo, director of technology readiness and Chief Data and Artificial Intelligence Officer (CDAO). “This strategy calls for strengthening the workforce’s digital literacy, encouraging adoption of new tools, and fostering a culture that embraces digital innovation and continuous learning.”
The Coast Guard said implementation is already underway through its Technical Readiness Transformation office, with pilots, enterprise data initiatives, and hands-on AI roadshows planned across the service.
