The Salvation Army Announces Weekend Events in Support of Victims of Human Trafficking

Cincinnati, OH (September 25, 2014) - The Salvation Army in Cincinnati today announced that it will hold several events this weekend for the victims of human trafficking at its Citadel Corps, downtown Cincinnati (120 E. Central Parkway).  The events are free and open to the public, as a means to encourage others to learn more about the realities of human trafficking in our own community. The events are being held in conjunction with The Salvation Army's International Weekend of Prayer and Fasting for Human Trafficking Victims.

On Friday, Sept. 26th, the film "Very Young Girls" will be screened, starting at 6:00 pm.  The film powerfully presents and addresses the issue of sex trafficking in the United States. Following the screening will be a discussion forum. On Sunday, Sept. 28th, events begin with a worship service at 11:00 am, followed by lunch at 12:30 pm and a Remembrance Ceremony at 1:30 pm.  The prayer service will focus on the concerns of those affected by and working to combat human trafficking.  The Remembrance Ceremony will call to mind those who have been lost through human trafficking, and will include a balloon release and other activities in their honor.  The events on both Friday and Sunday will include light refreshments.

"We're hopeful that the weekend events will further build awareness and engage more people in the community regarding our efforts to combat human trafficking," stated Major Faith Miller, Program Secretary at The Salvation Army. "Many people are concerned about this issue, and we welcome them to join us this weekend as we seek to interact with those willing to help."

In Greater Cincinnati, The Salvation Army launched an Anti-Human Trafficking program in 2012.  Since its inception, the program has provided comprehensive services to hundreds of individuals.  Forms of assistance have included 24-hour support leaving the trafficking situation, safe housing, medical and legal assistance, and ongoing support to help survivors become stable in the community.

"We're working every day to build awareness of and help those directly affected by human trafficking," stated Erin Meyer, Program Manager for The Salvation Army's Anti-Human Trafficking program in Greater Cincinnati.  "I'm excited about the weekend's events, as we have the opportunity to welcome and meet more individuals that want to join us in this important work."

Those in need of assistance or wanting to report a possible incidence of human trafficking can call 513-800-1863.  The hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  For those interested in learning more about The Salvation Army's Anti-Human Trafficking program, or to volunteer, please call 513-762-5600 to be connected to Erin Meyer, program manager.
