Spring for a New Look

Spring is a great time for a home refresh. Jill Koch, interior designer with Designs on Madison, an interior design firm in East Walnut Hills, says when winter is finally over, "sprucing up the house brings excitement for the warm weather approaching."

One trend that’s popular with many of the clients Designs on Madison serves is outdoor living. When warm weather returns, Koch, as well as many of her clients, can’t wait to be back outside. "In the past, outdoor fireplaces and covered porches were not typically design ‘musts,’" she says. "Now they’re almost always incorporated in any new home construction or remodeling project."

Extending the living area outside with a comfortable seating area or fun and colorful dining space makes sense for today’s lifestyle. "Homeowners love having the secondary space," Koch says, "and I find excitement in designing these spaces with clients for them to enjoy.

Another trend that’s popular with the firm’s clients is having an open floor plan. "I love the open-concept plans," Koch says. "Families are able to really enjoy being together." When a kitchen is open to a living space, she says, the person preparing dinner or prepping for a party can stay connected with family or guests.
