5 Things You Didn’t Know About Dr. Mark Mandell-Brown

1. Doctor Dreams

Dr. Mark Mandell-Brown wanted to be a doctor since the age of four. Diagnosed with meningitis, life saving antibiotics initiated at Columbus Childrens Hospital (where he grew up) cured his illness. But the antibiotic also stained his permanent teeth. Self-conscious, he always wanted to help people with their appearance. In pre-school, while the teacher was helping the children build birdhouses, Mandell-Brown could not wait his turn, so he took the hammer, nails and wood and built the birdhouse himself. Amazed, the teacher told his parents that the 4-year-old should be encouraged to work with his hands.

Always a planner, Mandell-Brown decided to go to Northwestern University while in the second grade. "I liked the school pennant on my bedroom waste basket decorated with all the major college pennants." Years later, he attended the highly acclaimed college in Evanston, Illinois. With multiple medical school offers, he decided to attend the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Training led him to Denver, Pittsburgh, and Birmingham, Alabama. He observed, "I was always interested in aesthetic surgery and you only get trained once. Programs in these cities offered the best training I could find."

2. He’s One in 100

Mandell-Brown is a triple board certified cosmetic surgeon. He holds board certification in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Body Cosmetic Surgery and Head and Neck Surgery. Each exam had a six hour intense oral examination followed the next day with a four hour written examination. Dr. Mandell-Brown did so well that he was asked to be an exam writer for both the Facial Plastic and Cosmetic Boards. He has also served as an oral examiner for the Cosmetic Boards held annually in Dallas, Texas.

His expertise is recognized nationally as he serves on the Cosmetic Advisory Board for Berkshire Hathaway owned Medpro Insurance. He also serves on the Board of Trustees for AAAHC, the largest accreditation association for outpatient surgery centers. Currently, he is Chairman of the Surveyor Training Committee. He also serves as Secretary on the Board of Trustees for the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.

3. He’s a Teacher and Mentor

The Mandell-Brown Plastic Surgery Center has a seminar room that holds 40 people and connects with video into the operating room. He has hosted seminars on Breast Augmentation and Breast Lift, as well as Liposuction and Abdominoplasty for cosmetic surgeons. The seminars attract doctors from as far as Australia, England, and Canada as well as many states in the U.S. Held in conjunction with the Cincinnati College of Medicine as well as Wright State University, Dr. Mandell-Brown and his guest faculty help teach the latest advances in cosmetic surgery.

Mandell-Brown has also been course director at Cosmetic Workshops in Miami, Florida; LSU Medical School in New Orleans and this past year at University of San Diego Medical School. Doctors gather worldwide to learn the latest in Brazilian Butt Lift, Face Lifts, Eyelid Surgery, and Breast and Body surgery.

With a strong sense of giving back, Mandell-Brown started an approved Fellowship in Cosmetic Surgery. This is one of 25 American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery Fellowships. The fellow is a board certified physician who spends a full year at the Mandell-Brown Plastic Surgery Center observing plastic surgery. "Just as I was trained to develop the skills I have to provide the very best to my patients, I wanted to pass this on to the next generation of cosmetic surgeons," he stated.

4. Mandell-Brown Keeps Busy

So what does he do in his spare time? Mandell-Brown serves as a surgery center inspector for AAAHC, the largest accreditation association for out patient surgery centers. This past year, he travelled to Beverly Hills; Miami; New York City; Little Rock, Arkansas and Portland, Oregon to inspect plastic surgery centers to ensure the centers are meeting the safety standards set by AAAHC. "It is time away from the office but I strive to be a good representative for AAAHC and help ensure patient safety from a practical viewpoint," he observed. "I always learn something as much as I try to help the organization that I survey," he added.

5. Award-winning Surgeon

In February 2017 at the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery Annual Meeting in San Diego, Mandell-Brown was honored with the "Webster Award." Named after famed Boston plastic surgeon Richard Webster M.D, the award has been given to such notorieties as Suzan Obagi, M.D. (Obagi skin care) and Jean Carrouthers M.D. (inventor of cosmetic Botox). Cincinnati's "Top Doc" in plastic surgery received the award for his many contributions and teachings in the field of cosmetic surgery.

So what does Mark Mandell-Brown really do for down time?

"I build Legos," he smilingly exclaimed. "Currently I am working on an entire city with Lego stores, homes, trains and cars," he added. "It is a great way to relax and focus on something fun". Perhaps it is a reflection of his inner child and his innate ability to construct with his hands, whether building birdhouses, improving someone's appearance or creating a Lego City.
