Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra Presents Summermusik 2019

The Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra marks its 45^th anniversary this year. To celebrate the occasion, as well as the highly successful 2018 Summermusik festival season that saw a dramatic 50% increase in subscriptions, this year music director Eckart Preu has again programmed three weeks of innovative and entertaining concert events.

“Each performance of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra will bear it’s inimitable mark of funk and fun… delivered with style and dedication to the highest artistic quality,” said Preu. “Covering 500 years of music history - from the heavenly music of the Renaissance to the wild virtuoso percussion solos of our time - each program is designed to surprise, captivate, and entertain.”

Summermusik will again offer three different concert experiences - each designed to provide something special for everyone’s musical tastes. Our festival season includes full chamber orchestra performances at the School for Creative & Performing Arts in OTR, as well as A Little Afternoon Musik concerts and Chamber Crawl concerts, which are a fun and interactive series held at popular bars and restaurants around Greater Cincinnati.

Visions of da Vinci    Saturday, August 3, 2019

Leonardo da Vinci exemplifies the term ‘Renaissance man’. To mark the 500^th anniversary of his passing, visual artists from Liquid Video Solutions will wrap the hall in some of da Vinci’s most famous paintings and drawings, creating an immersive experience that will enhance the musical performance. One of the top percussion virtuosos of our time, Nebojsa Jovan Zivkovic will perform Vivaldi’s dazzling Concerto in C Major arranged by Dame Evelyn Glennie. The CCO will also premiere a work by Zivkovic based on the famous hidden melody in da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.” A grand finish to opening night will be highlights from Handel’s Water Music.

Join CCO musicians and percussionist Nebojsa Jovan Zivkovic at the Cincinnati Nature Center (CNC). An afternoon of music will take the listener from the darkness of Danse Macabre to the light of “Ave Maria.” CNC conservationist Cory Christopher will partner with Eckart to share some fun ties between the repertoire and nature, and will lead attendees on a private tour of their new native plants greenhouse.

Felix Mendelssohn’s brilliant sister Fanny was often overshadowed by her brother’s fame. Many common musical threads tie together her Overture and his Italian Symphony. Although lesser known than her brother, Nannerl Mozart was arguably the most musically talented member of the family and served as Wolfgang’s inspiration for his Concerto in E-flat Major for two pianos written for them to perform together. Playing as a duo for over two decades, the husband and wife Silver-Garburg Piano Duo of Sivan Silver and Gil Garburg have been praised for their “pianistic fireworks” and “exceptional sensitivity” at the keyboard. Actors from Cincinnati Shakespeare Company will share excerpts from composers’ letters and diaries that will provide insights into their interpersonal relationships.

CCO assistant concertmaster Sujean Kim leads a mixed ensemble in a concert featuring famous musical works about water and rivers. Repertoire will range from pieces made popular by bluegrass artists such as Alison Krauss, to classical favorites such as The Moldau, The Blue Danube Waltz and Water Music. Bluegrass duo The Pedigos will be featured along with soprano Shareese Johnson. The CCO is pleased to be partnering with Cincinnati Parks historian Michael George who will share interesting facts and historical photos about the heritage of our beautiful riverfront parks.

Welcome one of the true legends of classical guitar to Cincinnati: Pepe Romero. Pepe will perform a composition his father dedicated to him, the Concierto de Málaga. Inspired by exotic and fiery Spanish sounds that incorporate flamenco elements, the CCO will feature internationally acclaimed flamenco dancer Arleen Hurtado. Providing a rhythmic center to the orchestral fabric will be palmero and vocalist Gabriel Osuna, showcasing this unique style of hand clapping. From glimmering strings to flamenco guitar, enjoy an evening of music that is brilliant, joyful and quintessentially Spanish.

Commentary & Film Screening of Amadeus

The 1985 winner of eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Amadeus is a film that Roger Ebert called “magnificent.” Based on a play by Peter Shaffer, who also wrote the script, the film is set in Vienna during the latter half of the 18^th century. It details a fictionalized biography of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Before the show, hear commentary about the film from CCO music director Eckart Preu.

From Joseph Bologne to Leopold Mozart to Antonio Salieri of Amadeus fame, we will try to re-establish a level playing field for some of the famous composers of the era. Routinely described as a “prodigy,” clarinetist Julian Bliss has performed with orchestras around the world. He will perform Mozart’s beautiful clarinet concerto, featured in the movie Out of Africa. A composer who preferred his works to feel true-to-life, Mozart’s father Leopold’s “Peasant Wedding” features commonly heard instruments of the time, including the bagpipes and hurdy gurdy. To close Summermusik the CCO will perform Mozart’s emotional Symphony No. 39.
