Venue Magazine: What distinctives set Mays Dentistry apart?

Dr. Jane R. Mays: Our practice is centered around providing total health. Our main message is that oral health will impact total health. During our clinical exams, we review or update a patient’s health history, complete a clinical exam, radiographs and a periodontal evaluation (like all other dental practitioners), but we also have thorough discussions about yearly physical exams, regular dermatology checks, screenings for sleep apnea, laboratory testing to evaluate oral pathogens utilizing OralDNA and the role of inflammatory gene markers and their health implications. Our personal mission is to improve the health and well-being of our patients, our practice and our community through changing professional and public behaviors by addressing the importance of oral health as it relates to the

whole body.

Venue Magazine: Which services would you like to emphasize?

Dr. Jane R. Mays: The integration of OralDNA laboratory testing into our practice definitely sets us apart from the average dental practice. This test is designed to: 1) Find hidden oral pathogens that threaten your oral and systemic health. Common pathogens directly cause gum disease and may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke and birth complications. 2) Learn if you were born with gene markers associated with increased inflammation, a critical factor in the severity of periodontal disease, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. 3) Help the dentist select the most effective treatment if a patient has periodontal disease, and then measure results with a follow-up test. And 4) Learn if you have HPV high-risk types associated with oral cancer.

Venue Magazine: Of what aspects of your practice are you most proud?

Dr. Jane R. Mays: Our team is exceptional at treating every patient as a unique individual by utilizing testing that allows us to identify specific bacteria responsible for a patient’s gum disease, addressing the cause and reducing the likelihood of disease occurrence and/or recurrence in the future. We focus on implementing teamwork to help each patient have a "wow experience" in our office.

Venue Magazine: What are some of the reasons your patients keep returning to your practice year after year?

Dr. Jane R. Mays: In our reviews, our patients state that they love the thorough and comprehensive care they receive from everyone in our office. Patients can tell that we are knowledgeable, skilled and truly "CARE" about their oral and overall health. We are one of their strongest advocates for thinking about and planning for health and wellness for their lifetime.

Venue Magazine: Could you share a bit about your community involvement?

Dr. Jane R. Mays: Our office has participated in the Cincinnati Dental Society’s "Leave No Vets Behind" program that offers free dental care to veterans who are screened by the CDS and qualify for treatment. We have also provided free dental services through UC – Blue Ash’s "Community Service Day," in which patients without dental insurance and limited financial resources in desperate need of extractions of infected teeth, fillings or cleanings can get the care they need for free.

Venue Magazine: Can you share about any exciting goals or new plans for the future?

Dr. Jane R. Mays: In the future, we hope to be able to establish an interdisciplinary group of physicians, dentists, dental hygienists and other related health professionals and educators that will work together to better understand the emerging principles of oral-systemic medicine and how it affects our patients’ health, as well as how to better work together to co-manage patient care.
