Riding for Cancer Research

“An athletic event that is a lot of fun and raises money for a good cause is the perfect way to describe Ride Cincinnati,” says Kathryn Macke, the event’s managing director. “I love it.”

The 11th annual Ride Cincinnati cycling event, scheduled for June 11, not only aims to raise awareness of cancer, but also raises money to fund research and patient care.

“Western & Southern is proud to continue our title sponsorship of Ride Cincinnati,” says John F. Barrett, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Western & Southern Financial Group. “The work being done at the Barrett Center is vital to finding a cure for cancer, and this event gives our community a tremendous opportunity to unite in that effort.”

The event has raised more than $2.5 million over the last decade to fund 34 grants for breast cancer research. Ride Cincinnati has expanded its scope to fund research for all types of cancer at the University of Cincinnati’s Barrett Cancer Center.

“This is an exciting time in the cancer research community. Thanks to new developments, a single treatment option can apply to a number of different cancers,” says Dr. William Barrett, director of the Barrett Center. “These discoveries wouldn’t be possible without the assistance of long-time partners like Ride Cincinnati that have helped pave the way for advancements that go way beyond breast cancer research.” 

Ride Cincinnati offers six cycling rides of varying distances that begin in Ohio and follow scenic Route 8 into Kentucky. It has added a 5K run/walk that can be done as a stand-alone event or after completing one of the cycling distances.

“We’re anticipating 2,300 riders and around 300 walkers and runners,” says Macke. “The most popular ride has always been our 63 mile option.”

Immediately following the rides and 5K run/walk is a celebration that includes food, live music and activities for kids.

“Last year we had more than 20 food vendors who all provided free samples for the participants,” says Macke. “For the first time last year we also had beer for sale by Fifty West Brewing Company.”

For those who might not be able to ride but want to contribute, there are opportunities to get involved to help reach Ride Cincinnati’s goal.

“We are always looking for volunteers,” says Macke. “Volunteers can register online starting in March. You can also donate to sponsor a rider or a team on our website, too.”
